Every Monday morning throughout KS1 and KS2 our maths lessons are planned to enable our pupils to advance their maths skills, knowledge and understanding by making connections between all aspects of maths. We call this our 'Monday Morning Maths' - it gets the week off to a great start!
During Monday Morning Maths, children use their maths thinking skills (powers) to solve problems through talk, practical challenges and in real-life contexts.
Our oldest, confident mathematicians in Year 5 also contribute to these lessons by being 'Maths Mentors' in the classes of Year 1 and Year 2 – a superb opportunity for these pupils to enrich their own learning by inspiring and guiding our younger pupils through their maths learning. For many pupils Monday Morning Maths is their favourite maths lessons.
As we continue to develop our maths curriculum our aim is to spread this kind of learning into all of our maths lessons; providing even deeper mastery and application of maths to equip our pupils for the real-life challenges of maths as independent problem searchers and solvers.
