We use a cursive handwriting programme at St Edmundsbury and teach children to join their handwriting from Year 1 (taking into account the child' readiness to learn this skill). Every child has a 15 minute handwriting session, practicing specific joins, each day. In Key Stage 1 these joins are linked to the sounds they are learning in phonics as well as words within their topic. By the end of Year 2, most children are able to join most graphemes learned in their phonics.
We have recently introduced the Pie Corbett methodology for writing 'Talk for Writing'. This programme enables children to apply actions to well known stories before using the structure of that story to create their own story. We have already seen a big impact on writing and are looking forward to seeing how this develops further over the coming year.
