Maths - Summer Term

As Year 6 students prepare for their SATs and the summer term, it is important to focus on essential areas of mathematics that they will encounter. At St Edmundsbury Academy, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which is aligned with the 2014 National Curriculum. This ensures that all students acquire the necessary skills and knowledge before transitioning to secondary school.

In preparation for the SATs, students will work on key topics including number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and fractions. Our aim is to help each child become confident in these areas, as they form the foundation for many mathematical concepts.

During the summer term, we will delve deeper into geometry, measurement, and statistics. Students will explore 2D and 3D shapes, angles, and the properties of shapes. We will also investigate the concepts of perimeter, area, and volume, allowing students to apply their mathematical understanding to real-world situations.

Additionally, students will engage with data handling, learning how to interpret graphs and charts effectively. Through practical activities and problem-solving tasks, we will encourage a growth mindset in mathematics, helping learners to develop resilience and a positive attitude towards challenges.

For those wanting to do any extra practice at home, the advantages of securing number facts, to aid partitioning of numbers and basic calculations is invaluable. Regular practice of multiplication facts using Time Tables Rock Stars (three times per week for 20 minutes as per homework expectations) is useful but for those who would like extra practice BBC Bitesize has a number of tests and games that can help to reinforce key facts.

They may find Guardians - Defenders of Mathematica' particularly good fun!

Year 6 Residential - Frontier Centre

A fantastic time was had by all, on our Year 6 Residential trip. The children showed numerous skills in teamwork and, at times, pushed themselves well outside of their comfort zones. They upheld our schools values and were a delight to work with. We are so proud of their achievements!

Here are a few photos from their trip.

Shakespearience Project

We have now begun our exciting project with The Theatre Royal, in which we are building up to our very own shared performance of 'Twelfth Night' at the theatre.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the theatre to watch professional actors perform the script, which will be used by the children, in a few short weeks.

Emma, a representative from the theatre, has visited school and begun workshopping the scenes with our buddy actors. We were all impressed with how well the children took to their roles and the progress they made during their first afternoon session. Well done Eagles; we can't wait to see you 'tread the boards' of the Theatre Royal!

Visiting Students - 3rd October

Today, we were lucky enough to have a group of students, who are visiting from China, pop in to teach us all some words in Mandarin. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and their pronunciation and writing were excellent. Our visitors enjoyed their teaching experience too. We do hope that they enjoy the rest of their trip!

 Twelfth Night

A huge thank you to all of our Year 6 children and their families for the incderible effort that went in to rehearsing for the Shakesperience project. The children performed beautifully on the night!

After a day of technical rehearsals - getting to grips with props, sound and lighting prompts - the children took to the stage with confidence, their hard work and dedication over the past few weeks shining through.

Parents, staff and Govenors watched on, briming with pride. Well done Eagles Class, you are amazing!

Safer Internet Day 2025

The 2025 Safer Internet Day theme was: ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online.'

The children participated in live lessons and carried out a number of activities designed to help them spot scams and phishing attempts online. They also looked into what makes a good password, to keep their accounts secure.

Year 6 were incredible at spotting the scams and saying what was suspicious about the content.

 Tiny Plays, Big Ideas

Eagles Class are lucky enough to be working alongside the Theatre Royal again this term. We were absolutely delighted to welcome Emma back after her wonderful support on the Shakespearience project.

We are taking part in a writing project called 'Tiny Plays, Big Ideas'. Over the past couple of weeks, Kitty Morgan - a playwrite, who often works with the theatre - has led some workshops, to teach the children how to develop ideas to write their own plays. We have had great fun acting out scenes and inventing dialgoue!

Over next next week we will be editing and typing our scripts before submitting them to the theatre. On 25th March, Eagles Class will go to the Theatre Royal and one of our pupil's plays will be performed on the stage by professional actors!

Tiny Plays Update

Our plays were finished, edited and absolutely fantastic; we know that the theatre staff must have had a hard time choosing only one!

As we waited for the performances to start, we tried to guess whose play might have been chosen based on the props and costumes on stage. All of the children were keen to see their own play up on stage but - in true St Edmundsbury style - they cheered wholeheartedly and with absolute pride for Sienna, when 'Moon Goddess' was performed.

 Extended Reality (XR) Lab Visit

Over the past two half terms, pupils have been learning about the uses of AI, followed by the history of computing, through the story of the codebreakers of Bletchley Park. After covering the history and present uses of technology, we extended pupil's thinking to the future by visiting the Extended Reality Lab at the University and Professional Development Centre in Bury St Edmunds for practical opportunities to enrich our learning about the future uses of technology.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and enaged in a whole host of activities.  They created snow, toured London, went on an underwater adventure and even went to space. They became painters, puppeteers and played the drums. The adults had so much fun watching the expressions on their faces as they manipulated the virtual worlds around them!
