'Discrete' Sessions

Music, Computing, PE, RE and Languages run as discrete sessions within Lower Key Stage 2

At St. Edmundsbury much of our music learning is supported by the Charanga Musical School, recommended by Suffolk County Music.  This online music scheme, covers a range of styles and genres and musically draws together listening/appraising, composing/improvising and performing skills in singing and instrument through lower and onto upper Key Stage 2.

Children learn about the inter-related dimensions of pitch, tempo, dynamics, duration, timbre and texture, and how these are used in musical structures to create a musical picture, mood or effect. Through Charanga we have access to a huge range of music from different countries and times, giving our children a good introduction to the History of Music from the Medieval era to today.

In addition, each child in Year 4 learns a musical instrument as part of a whole class ensemble, as well as having opportunities to improve their existing individual music skills.

During our discrete sessions, each year group within Lower Key Stage 2 access units on programming; computational thinking; creativity; computer networks; communication/collaboration; and productivity. Most of these units last for a half term, but this depends on the length of the half term. As with all of our curriculum, these are run on a two year programme.

We currently make use of the ‘Switched on Computing’ units.

PE is taught by both our class teachers and additional coaches. Class teachers make use of he Val Sabin PE programme, developing dance, gymnastics and athletics from year to year. Our external coaches also develop athletics skills as well as games.

RE learning in Lower Key Stage 2 covers Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism through the headings of Religion and the Individual; Symbols and Religious Expression; Beliefs in Action; Inspirational People; Believing; Religion, Family and Community. RE is taught each half term as complete 'RE Days' enabling children to really build upon their learning over the course of those days.

The overall focus in our French lessons is fun, involvement and enjoyment. The emphasis initially is on listening and speaking, but as the children progress, their reading and writing skills are developed. As well as watching films of French people going about their daily lives, we play games, sing songs, use puppets and other props to demonstrate the language. Children are encouraged to ‘have a go’, often in a role play situation, and they know that their friends are there to support them if they are struggling.

Each session practices and reinforces previously learnt language and introduces a new element. We learn our French skills through different topics (see overview) and in doing so we learn about the French culture and its traditions, as well as those in other French speaking countries like Morocco. We also enjoy comparing the different languages and cultures of the children in our school and we like to tell each other about our holiday experiences in places other than Bury St. Edmunds, especially when we have tried something new.

Throughout the school we are trying to talk to each other in simple, every day and classroom French, so don’t be surprised if your child starts talking French to you at home!
