Building on the cursive handwriting skills the children have developed in Key Stage 1, as they move into and through Key Stage 2 they develop accuracy and fluency in their style. In Year 3, children may begin to be awarded a 'pen licence' enabling them to use a pen in their written tasks.


Building on their compositional skills of Key Stage 1, children in Lower Key Stage 2 are taught how to draft, edit and evaluate their written work. They are taught to apply a growing range of punctuation and grammar structures to their writing and taught to write using a wider range of genres as starting points.
