Building on the cursive handwriting skills the children have developed in Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2, as they move through Upper Key Stage 2 they continue to develop accuracy and fluency in their style, with many children beginning to develop more individuality in their style. Throughout upper Key Stage 2, children can receive a bronze, silver or gold 'pen licence' for consistency and accuracy of their joined handwriting.

Children within Upper Key Stage 2 are taught to combine all the elements of grammar, punctuation and handwriting as they strive to produce more complex writing in a variety of different genres. As with the Pie Corbett 'Talk for Writing' methodology, these genres will be taken from books the children have been reading in class and stories that they have first hand experience of.
